PERRYVILLE: Mustangs following lead of senior class

Conference: 2-3A
Coach: Ed Baker
’12 Record: 1-9 (0-7)

The Mustangs have won four games in the last three years. Perryville started 2012 with a loss to county rival Bigelow. It was a disheartening blow to start the season, but the Mustangs rebounded in Week 2, defeating Cutter Morning Star, 28-20.

Unfortunately, that was the last victory the Mustangs tasted in 2012.

Senior Jess Jones replaces grad- uated all-conference quarterback Lane Tubbs. Senior Austin Brown and junior Kyler Gossett are projected as the starting slotbacks. Senior Christian Gossett will start at fullback.

Seniors Jesse Scott and Ryan Williams lead the way in the Mustang receiving corps.

A group of seniors will fill out the offensive line: Terrel Bird, Halston Tart, John Nicholson, Luke Gattis, Colby Stout and Scott Roland.

Tart, Nicholson and Bird and juniors Vaughn Hogan, Tyler Wood and James Stone will all rotate on the defensive line. Junior Corey Ireland returns as a starting linebacker. Brown, senior John Blackmon and Williams lead the secondary.

“It’s pretty simple, we expect to be better on both sides of the ball,” Baker said. “It will be a battle [in the 2-3A] between Harding, Barton and Mayflower. We have a good-sized senior class with a lot of experience. Our weaknesses are our lack of speed and depth.”
