PERRYVILLE: Another playoff trip driving Mustangs

Conference: 4-3A
Coach: Ed Baker
’16 Record: 4-7

Last year, the Perryville Mustangs accomplished something they hadn’t done in a long time.

“We made the playoffs for the first time since 2009,” Coach Ed Baker said. “We want to build off that. We expect to be better on both sides of the ball.”

Junior Landon Walker leads the Mustangs at quarterback. Senior Hunter Lawrence is back at running back after leading the Mustangs in rushing (994 yards and nine touchdowns) a year ago.

Perryville’s leading receiver is back, too. Senior Chris Hoyt hauled in 14 receptions and five touchdowns last fall. Seniors Cody Dufresne and Jacob Lee fill out the receiving corps.

Senior Billy Swafford is a three-year starter on the offensive and defensive lines. Lawrence sees action on both sides of the ball at linebacker. Senior Nathan Stout is back for his third year at inside linebacker. Hoyt leads the way in the secondary and was Perryville’s leading tackler (63) a year ago.

“Our work ethic and attitude are strengths,” Baker said. “Our conference is very competitive top to bottom.”
