Geocaching has become an extremely popular, high-tech treasure hunting game, with plenty of treasures to find in the 501.

According to www.geocache.com, the basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors by using a Global Positioning System (GPS) device and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups.
Drawing these treasure hunters to Arkansas State Parks has been coined “Parkcaching.” Arkansas has 52 state parks, each with its own special mission. The other thing they each have is a geocache. Each park cache has a clue that can lead treasure hunters to find a final, 53rd cache located somewhere in the state. Just download the clue sheet from www.arkansasstateparks.com/things-to-do/geocaching/ and start your adventure.
Recent numbers show that there are more than 5,500 geocaches hidden in Arkansas. The location of each geocache is marked with GPS coordinates shared via the Internet. Treasure-hunters use a hand-held GPS unit to hunt for the caches. Some caches contain log books in small tins or film canisters, while others hold mini treasures inside containers such as ammo boxes. Each hunt and the terrain around it vary in difficulty.
If you are headed for the state parks, park staff can answer questions, or contact the State Parks Director’s Office in Little Rock by sending your e-mail to [email protected]. For other treasures, visit www.geocaches.com.
So, grab your GPS and discover some of the wonders of the 501 and the rest of the state.
