Outdoor Recreation Office partners with BWWK+ for free kayaking

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Office of Outdoor Recreation (OOR) is partnering with Black Women Who Kayak+, LLC (BWWK+) to offer free kayaking from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, on the Little Maumelle River. Kayakers will access the Little Maumelle via the River Mountain Boathouse at 4420 River Mountain Road in Little Rock.

Although there is no charge to participate, those interested in being part of the event are required to register here.

“The beauty of The Natural State is something we want everyone to enjoy,” said Stacy Hurst, secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism. “We believe this event will expose new audiences to the unique and enjoyable outdoor experiences we offer. Spurring more participation in outdoor recreation is a key goal of our Office of Outdoor Recreation.”

OOR Director Katherine Andrews said that beyond being a one-time offering, organizers hope that this event will initiate the launch of a BWWK+ chapter in Central Arkansas.

“BWWK+’s goal of encouraging women of color to participate in sports in green spaces aligns perfectly with one of OOR’s goals: more diversity among those who take advantage of all the outdoor recreation The Natural State has to offer,” Andrews said.

Rock Town River Outfitters will provide all the kayaking equipment as well as life vests.

“Our focus is to educate about why it’s important for everyone to appreciate the land and water we love,” said BWWK+ Founder and President Tanya Walker. “We empower women to hold space in their new adventure and inspire women to include their family and friends, once they feel their new space is safe and welcoming.”

Free food and music will also be available. Children are welcome to attend.
