24 Apr 2012 'Loving LIFE' and new reading center
Guy-Perkins Elementary School students are “Loving LIFE” and a new and unique reading center – the result of some creativity and hard work.
“I found the idea on the Pinterest website, showed it to an involved parent, Misty Chaney (my life would be much harder without her), and we got right on it. We began collecting milk jugs in late December-early January,” wrote first grade teacher Kylie Farris at Guy-Perkins Elementary.
“I had family members saving jugs, parents in class, we advertised on Facebook and the Guy community began saving jugs for us. Mountain Pure Water Company donated several jugs and Blackhalk in Mayflower donated a couple hundred lids for us, it was great!
“I had several parents – Misty Chaney, Lydia Akers, Bertiz Haile, Denee’ Acre and many others – that helped to get the project completed. We finished on Jan. 31. We ended up using 389 gallon jugs and five half-gallon jugs. They are just hot glued together to form the igloo.”
Students in the class are Lucas Akers, Analee Baker, Kylie Carpenter, Raylee Chaney, Drew Dollar, Jo’Mia Ealy, Burt Garrison, Liberty Glover, Landen Harness, Nathan Hurst, Braydon Sims, Laila Thompson, Jaylin Wilson and Zackary Reeves.
“My students love our new reading center. They stay engaged and enthusiastic about reading in the igloo. They brought jugs in on their own everyday so they really had a big part in it being built. Any way to get students excited about reading is success in my book.
“I could not have done this without the help and support of my parents, community and fellow teachers! Thank you all!”
