‘Loving and loyal’

Maumelle newlyweds Cody and Ashley Stephens recently expanded their family with a dog named Henry Gene.

Ashley first saw Henry at North Hills Animal Hospital where she works.

“Henry Gene was rescued from a shelter and brought to North Hills Animal Hospital to find a home,” said Ashley. “Cody and I had been talking about getting a dog, and Henry was perfect for us! Since we don’t have any other pets or kids, Henry gets all of our love and attention! He is definitely our ‘first child.’”

The couple adopted the long-haired miniature Dachshund one month after being married. The twosome loves the joy that Henry has brought into their home.

“Pets provide love, entertainment and joy in a world that can often focus on the negative,” Cody said. “It is so refreshing!”

Ashley appreciates the love and loyalty that Henry Gene has for her as well as Cody.

“My favorite thing about being a pet owner is the unconditional love that pets give,” Ashley said. “No matter what, pets see the best in their owners, and it is so rewarding to care for a living creature that is so loving and loyal.”

Henry Gene has a unique yet spunky personality.

“Henry Gene is one-of-a-kind; we’ve never met a dog like him,” Ashley said. “His personality is definitely true to his breed. Dachshunds are spunky, protective and energetic!”

In his downtime Henry enjoys playing with his toys.

“If any guests, (human or other pets), come to our home, he runs around to hide all of his toys so that no one will see them,” Cody said.

Although Henry Gene is very playful, he is also very loving. He is intuitive and comforts his owners when they are not feeling their best.

“This dog has so much love to give,” Ashley said. “He could spend all day snuggled up with us. He is also very sensitive to our emotions. He knows when we are sad or tired, and he will show concern with lots of affection.”

The Stephens are currently planning for Henry Gene to remain an “only-child.” In order to socialize Henry, he has frequent play-dates with Ashley’s parents’ dogs.

“For now we are just focusing on Henry,” Ashley said. “There hasn’t been any discussion of getting another pet right now. However, Henry often gets to play with my parents’ dogs — Otis, Charlie, and Lucy.”

While Cody is working during the day at Windstream, Henry Gene accompanies his “mom” to work. While at work with Ashley, he also has plenty of social interactions with many types of animals.

“Henry Gene goes to work with me at North Hills Animal Hospital every day,” Ashley said. “He works with the receptionists to greet clients and patients. He’s always available to give anyone some puppy therapy!”
