27 Sep 2017 Jimerson leads charged Malvern offense
by Levi Gilbert
Demias Jimerson is a rare talent, and he’s treating Malvern fans to a can’t-look-away experience every time he steps on the football field.
Malvern’s senior quarterback has put up big numbers in the first four games of the season, helping keep the Leopards in offensive shootouts with opponents.
The highlight of the season so far came in Week 3 against the Lakeside Rams. Jimerson rushed for 404 yards and six touchdowns, and he was 13-of-20 passing for 125 yards and one score. Jimerson led the Leopards to a come-from-behind victory, keying a 45-point second half to get the 67-58 win over Lakeside.
“It was my favorite football memory,” Jimerson said. “We didn’t have the best first half. We came together and made the most amazing comeback that I’ve had the privilege to be a part of.”
In four games, Jimerson has amassed what could be considered “video game stats.” He’s combined for more than 1,200 total yards and 16 total touchdowns, including two kickoff returns.
“Football is a team sport,” Jimerson said. “My personal stats to me don’t matter. What I want the most is for my team to be successful.”
The Leopards have been in every game this season, but have found themselves 1-3 (0-1).
“We can easily turn this around by hitting the practice field and working harder,” Jimerson said. “Some things that are working for us are our passing and running game. Our offense is pretty diverse.
“My personal goal this year as a senior is to help lead us into the playoffs. I plan to practice harder and do all that I can to help us become champions. I believe that’s a great way to end my last year as a Leopard.”
Jimerson was selected to this year’s 501 Football Team — 25 players representing all 11 counties of the 501. The team, sponsored by Conway Ortho and Sports Medicine, Conway Regional Health System and First Security Bank, boasts the best the 501 has to offer both on and off the field. Jimerson was nominated by his head coach, Mike Scarbrough.
“Demias is a quiet leader and very competitive,” Scarbrough wrote in his nomination. “He’s very respectful and has high character.”
Jimerson also plays basketball and baseball for the Leopards. “I have a real passion for baseball. I love it,” Jimerson said. He hit .457 last year for the Leopards, driving in 26 RBI. He posted an 8-2 record with a 1.46 ERA.
“When I’m not playing [sports], you can find me fishing or hanging out with friends and family,” Jimerson said. “I really enjoy the outdoors.”
Jimerson and the Leopards play host to Mena at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We’re so close,” Jimerson said. “Through hard work we will turn this around. It’s our homecoming. Winning is a must. We hope the energy of this game will lead us in excelling through the rest of the season.”
