This series, which is part of The Oxford American Summit for Ambitious Writers, is open to the public at no cost and features interviews with the editor emeritus of The Atlantic Monthly William Whitworth, the travel writer Pico Iyer, and The New Yorker editor David Remnick.
The interview series will begin with editor emeritus of The Atlantic Monthly William Whitworth on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 4 p.m. Whitworth began his career as a reporter for the Arkansas Gazette in Little Rock, then moved to the New York Herald Tribune. Hired by The New Yorker as a staff writer, Whitworth quickly rose as an editor and worked on many of the magazine’s most important nonfiction articles. In 1980, he became chief editor of The Atlantic Monthly, a position he held for twenty years.
The second interview in the series, with travel writer Pico Iyer, takes place on Thursday, June 23 at 4 p.m. Iyer is the author of seven nonfiction works, including “The Lady and the Monk” and “Video Night in Kathmandu.” Utne Reader credits Iyer with “elevating travel reportage to new heights.” A book signing will follow the interview.
The interview series will conclude on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 2 p.m. with the editor of The New Yorker, David Remnick. Remnick began his reporting career at the Washington Post in 1982. He became a staff writer at The New Yorker in 1992 and has since written over a hundred pieces for the magazine. He was selected to be The New Yorker’s chief editor in 1998 and since then The New Yorker has won thirty National Magazine awards. He is the author of several books, including “Lenin’s Tomb,” for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction. His most recent book is “The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama.” Many writers consider Remnick to be the very best editor in America.
The interview series will be conducted by Marc Smirnoff, editor of The Oxford American Magazine.
