Harding presents free holiday concerts

The Harding University Department of Music will host several free concerts in the next two weeks including the University Chorus, Jazz Band, Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Belle Canto and Orchestra.

Tuesday, Nov. 29, 7 p.m., Chorus, Administration Auditorium

Repertoire includes American, Scottish and Finnish folksongs as well as arrangements by Bruckner, Buchenberg and Kirchner. The group will perform these pieces during their winter tour and at the Christian College Choral Festival in January.

Thursday, Dec. 1, 7 p.m., Jazz Band, Reynolds Recital Hall

Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Cook, the Jazz Band performs blues, swing, Latin, funk and contemporary styles at campus concerts and area jazz festivals. For their concluding concert of the semester, the group will feature Christmas selections.

Friday, Dec. 2, 7:30 p.m., Chamber Singers, Reynolds Recital Hall

Ranging from 12-20 members, the University Chamber Singers will present a one-hour Christmas program around the themes of angels and shepherds, featuring music of a variety of styles such as classical, pop or Disney.

Saturday, Dec. 3, 8 p.m., Concert Choir, First United Methodist Church

Comprised of 90 members from approximately 30 different majors, the Concert Choir will present a community Christmas concert following the Searcy Christmas Parade including choruses from Messiah and traditional Christmas carol arrangements.

Sunday, Dec. 4, 5 p.m., Belle Canto, Reynolds Recital Hall

Beginning in 2011, Belle Canto is the University’s all-women ensemble. The group performs secular and sacred pieces at campus concerts and events such as the annual Bible Lectureship.

Monday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m., Orchestra, Cone Chapel

Playing alongside a picturesque view of Harding’s Christmas lights, the Orchestra will present selections such as Strauss’ “On the Beautiful Blue Danube Waltzes” and Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto.” Two pieces will be performed by a string trio.
