20 Jun 2010 Grinders, stromboli, gelato and more
Ken and Robin Stauffer have made it their goal to study and reproduce New York hand-tossed pizza, strombolis and grinders. (For those who need a lesson, “grinders” are delicious breads with meats, vegetables and cheeses – all heated through. Simple, but far more than just toasted.)
In case you’ve figured it out, Stromboli’s is not a chain. It’s an independent restaurant – a true “mom and pop” establishment owned by Ken and Robin. Ken, originally from Lancaster, Pa., dreamed of bringing his favorite East Coast strombolis, grinders and pizzas to the Conway area. Gelato, sorbetto, cannolis, tiramisu, pastas, paninis and salads are also on the generous menu.
Robin, originally from central Missouri, owns a graphic design business and is the founder of Conway’s Silver Moon Cinema, now a Conway Parks and Recreation Department event.
After the delicious Grande cheese, Fontanini meats and Stanislaus sauces, you must try the gelato or the sorbetto. Gelato is an Italian ice cream, all natural, with half the fat! Sorbetto is a non-dairy, fat free, fruit based, all natural Italian ice! How does peanut butter and chocolate gelato, blood orange, lemon or mango sorbetto sound to you?
Stromboli’s offers outside catering and also delivers. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. If there’s no time for dining in, call ahead for one of their party platter salads or the cannoli platter! And, oh yes, don’t forget to try the Meathead Stromboli! This one is reserved for true meat lovers, with ham, pepperoni, Italian sausage, beef and two cheeses – Monterey Jack and mozzarella.
