Game on! Team spirit in the home

by RaeLynn Callaway

I don’t know about you but my house is filled with athletes and sport fanatics! I feel sure that is true for most families throughout the 501. In keeping with this month’s theme on sports, I thought I would share with you some pictures and ideas to infuse any room with excitement and thrill, no matter what the sport.

Whether you are designing a family room, game room or child’s bedroom, remember that paint can be an inexpensive way to show team spirit. Think about painting an accent wall or even the ceiling in your team’s color. For a die-hard fan, using a stencil or projector to trace your team’s logo on the wall leaves no one guessing who you’re rooting for! If you are a little less adventurous, you can always buy a wall-skin, decal or mural. Either way the effect is awesome!

If you are an athlete and not just a fan of a sport, use personal photos, trophies and awards to decorate. Displaying these collectables on shelving not only adds to the room’s décor, but also allows you to enjoy your achievements. Bonus: This kind of vertical storage is not only appealing to the eye, but also a great way to stay organized. These displays can also be changed easily if the theme shifts.

If you are not sure where to begin and need some inspiration, start by picking up interchangeable accents. Pillows, rugs and wall art make an impact and get you headed in the right direction. Don’t have a large budget? Use things you already have on hand. Bats, balls, gloves and helmets make great display pieces. You can even frame or just hang jerseys that the kids have outgrown. Do you have sports magazines lying around collecting dust? Frame some of those favorite covers.

No matter if your focus is on a particular sport, cheering on your favorite team or mixing your sports with your favorite hobbies, showing your team spirit and highlighting your personal style is the key. The possibilities are endless.
