25 Aug 2012 FUNKY FRUGAL: First impressions
by Tanner Cangelosi
First impressions make quite an impact.
When we first moved into our home, our front door was a simple black.
I have a love for color that runs deep, although I like keeping the exterior of my house pretty traditional and calm, simply for resale value. With my front door I decided to go a little wild because painting over just a front door is an easy fix.
I priced Acadian front doors and the front door I really wanted was around $1,000, so painting the door I had was the next best thing. I began by cleaning the front door and priming it. Next it was time to choose a paint color.
At Walmart I found some exterior “oops paint” in a shade of peacock blue that I had to have. Oops paint is when they mix paint for someone and then don’t end up selling it. Then it is sold at a discounted price. I love buying this paint and putting it up for a day when I need a change in my house! So for $11, I changed my door to a cheerful invitation to all who knocked on it!
Next, with some chalkboard paint that I already had from another project, I painted a little design on the middle of the door. I use this chalk area to write seasonal greetings or messages for party guests.
It works quite well if you have a covered porch.
Finally, I hung a wreath hanger with a wreath on the top of the door. I was quite pleased with the final result. The guests who enter our home are sure to receive a cheerful first impression!
