Football defeats Lyon in Battle for Scotzilla

CONWAY — Hendrix defeated Lyon College 38-21 Oct. 25 on what was a windy, rainy afternoon at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick before being pushed up to 12 p.m. due to inclement weather.

Auvic White led all participants with 124 yards rushing on 15 carries with two touchdowns.

Clay Brandenburg field-goal on their opening possession gave Hendrix the lead, and Jacob Buniff hit Westin Bruce for a 64-yard score on the Warriors’ second possession to put Hendrix up by two scores. The Scots responded late in the first quarter with a touchdown to get on the board, but White put more distance between the two sides with his longest rush of the night, a 57-yard score to put Hendrix up 17-7.

Lyon hit back with a score early in the second quarter, then took the lead with six minutes remaining in the half, but Jake Blice, who entered in relief of Buniff, found Kobey Wall from 23 yards out to put Hendrix back up with 20 seconds left on the clock. Hendrix would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the match.

Blice was again on the money early in the second half as he hit Brooks McGee for a 42-yard touchdown to give Hendrix a two-possession lead. White punched in his second touchdown of the afternoon with seven minutes left in the third quarter for the game’s final score.

Jayvian Coulter led all participants with 9 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, while Mason Johnson recorded two sacks. Chandler Laurent and Jacob Moody each recorded a solo sack, and Sam Spurlock and Tristian Johnson got in on a sack as well.

Hendrix recorded 26 first downs and held Lyon to 16, while also limiting the Scots to just 40 yards rushing. Offensively, Hendrix put up 538 yards of total offense, and Zach Schultz‘s defense allowed 233 yards on the day.

The win improves Hendrix to 4-3 and 2-1 in the SCAC. The Warriors will remain in Conway to host Centenary next Saturday for senior night and a 6:00 PM kick at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
