14 May 2014 First Security Kids' Triathlon moves to Hendrix College
The 17th annual First Security Conway Kids’ Triathlon is moving to Hendrix College this year and registration is now open. Youth ages 6 to 15 can register at conwaykidstri.com until Friday, Aug. 1, as long as spots are still available.
The Saturday, Aug. 2, event is one of the country’s premier youth triathlons for all kids, not just kids who participate in triathlons.
"We are so excited about our new location for the Triathlon this year at Hendrix College. Hendrix is actually where the triathlon started out so it’s like going home for us,” said Shannon Milam, Conway Kids’ Triathlon race director. “When we first had the event at Hendrix, the Triathlon included 75 participants and last year we had 360. The event has continued to grow over our 16 years and we only expect it to grow in the many years ahead."
Triathlons are events involving three sports – swimming, biking and running; and while the health benefits of participating are obvious, the self-confidence that comes from being involved in an endurance event is just as important.
“Hendrix College is excited to host the Conway Kids’ Triathlon this year. We are looking forward to this top-notch event that draws athletes from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Tennessee. They will definitely enjoy the venue, atmosphere and overall experience,” said Karl Lenser, director of wellness programs and facilities at Hendrix College.
The Conway Kids’ Triathlon is an event for all abilities. Ages 6-10 complete a 50-yard swim, two-mile bike and ½ mile run. Ages 11-15 complete a 100-yard swim, four-mile bike and mile run. Many kids participating in the event are experienced at triathlons and are working to improve their finish times and place. For many other kids, this event will be their first triathlon, and they are working to finish the race and accomplish personal goals.
The First Security Conway Kids’ Triathlon is presented by the Conway Running Club and title sponsor, First Security. The event emphasizes health, self-esteem, self-confidence and fun in a safe, family-friendly environment. This year’s Triathlon benefits Soul Food Café Mission.
