28 Jun 2013 Fifteenth annual Fabulous Fourth planned
The biggest July 4th celebration in the River Valley will be along the banks of the Arkansas River at Cherokee Park in Morrilton.
Symbolic of the freedom our country has fought for and in honor of all those who serve to protect our freedom FABULOUS FOURTH is 100 percent free.
A spectacular fireworks show will light up the sky at 9 p.m., but the celebration begins at 5 p.m. That’s when the main stage opens for non-stop music and entertainment.
Hunter Garret, co-chair and emcee, will kick off the event with a talent contest and an apple pie bake off. (To sign up, contact Hunter at 501.215.0815.)
Attendees can enjoy free hot dogs, watermelon, ice tea and lemonade. For the second year, Henson’s Island Ice will be giving away sno-cones. At 8:30 p.m. there will be a watermelon eating contest for all ages.
Cherokee Park is a Corps of Engineers facility with plenty of room for all to spread out a blanket or set up lawn chairs and enjoy the festivities. Coolers and picnic baskets are welcome and there are a limited number of grills and picnic tables available. Hundreds of red, white and blue helium balloons will be given out and children can join in the organized games and romp on the playground.
The park will be surrounded by 200 American flags and Petit Jean Mountain is a majestic sight to the west. As the grand finale, the fireworks will be synchronized to a musical tribute to all branches of the military.
This event is free thanks to 75-plus businesses, organizations and individuals who donate their time, talent and money. Attendees will meet Conway County Judge Hart serving up hot dogs cooked by the Morrilton Volunteer Fire Department. Morrilton Mayor Nelson will be setting up and taking down the American flags among his many other tasks leading up to and during the event. The Conway County Sheriff’s Office, Med-Tech EMS and the Office of Emergency Management will be on hand. These groups, along with dozens of ordinary citizens, volunteer to give their time so that attendees can have a relaxing and enjoyable Fourth of July.
