25 May 2017 ‘Feed the Need’ giving event Sunday
Faulkner County residents have an opportunity to help alleviate hunger this summer through the “Feed the Need” event on Sunday, May 28.
Local churches, organizations and individuals are invited to go to any of the five participating locations between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to purchase select food items and leave them on location to be distributed to hungry families in the community.
“Feed the Need” trucks will be on site at Walmart on Dave Ward, Walmart Neighborhood Market on Prince Street, both Kroger stores on Salem Road and Oak Street, and 10 Box on Harkrider Street. Shopping lists with needed items will be available and the stores will pull items forward during the event for the convenience of shoppers. After purchasing the items, volunteers will collect food at the trucks and prepare for delivery to the StoreHouse Food Pantry at the Conway Ministry Center.
“Faulkner County residents may be unaware of the food insecurity that exists in their own community. As we officially launch into summer, this insecurity becomes an even greater concern for many low-income parents in the area,” said Spring Hunter, executive director of the Conway Ministry Center.
Arkansas ranks second in the nation for hunger, with 19.1 percent of Arkansans not knowing where their next meal will come from. One in four children and one in four seniors are at risk for hunger in Arkansas even with nutrition programs like SNAP. With school closing for the summer, children who normally receive free breakfast and lunch during the school year will be at an increased risk for hunger over the next three months.
The StoreHouse is a client choice food pantry that allows hungry families to shop for foods that meet the family’s individual needs. The Storehouse also provides clothing, shoes, hygiene and household products. Food collected through Feed the Need will be distributed directly through the Storehouse, as well as supporting other pantries in the community.
“Feed the Need” is one day only.
