Editor’s Note February ’17: A heart for the arts

The 501 is blessed with a plethora of talented artists whose creativity shines in their works. The many artists and musicians who call the 501 home are real treasures, adding beauty, entertainment, enjoyment and meaning to “Loving LIFE.”

Likewise, individuals who have a heart for the arts are plentiful throughout our area. Those of us with an appreciation for art are invited to share in their creative expression through local galleries and shows as well as concerts and recitals.

In celebration of “The Arts” this month, 501 LIFE is featuring the very talented Bryan Massey in our cover story. One of his latest creations – Otis the bear – is prominently displayed on the wall of the new Donaghey Hall at the University of Central Arkansas. The signature piece illustrates “Bear Pride” as well as offering another venue for local public art.

We are thankful to Bryan for sharing his story with 501 LIFE readers and to Brenda McClain and Art on the Green for their assistance with the cover story and other features in this month’s edition.

A special thank-you

This month, 501 LIFE features three individuals who have given of themselves in helping others but who are now closing a chapter in their lives – former Conway Mayor Tab Townsell (Page 20), Conway dentist Dr. Terry Fiddler (Page 34) and University of Central Arkansas President Tom Courtway (Page 66). We applaud each for their service and wish them well in their next venture.

As we said, there is much to celebrate – talented people and fantastic places – when it comes to “The Arts” in Central Arkansas.
Until next month, here’s to “Loving LIFE” and “The Arts” in the 501.
