06 Dec 2023 CBC upsets #23 Columbia for first AMC win
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Opening the American Midwest Conference portion of their schedule Nov. 30, Central Baptist College men’s basketball took on the #23 ranked Cougars of Columbia College inside the Arena at Southwell Complex. CBC (8-2, 1-0 AMC) never trailed, leading by as many as 28 at one point in the second half, while fighting off a late charge to beat #23 CC (6-2, 0-1 AMC) 80-70.
Kyle Harding led five Mustangs in double figures scoring while Jonas Carlisle paced the team in rebounding and Devin Foster led the way in assists. CBC shot 47 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep while holding Columbia to 43 percent and 36 percent, respectively. The Mustangs raced out to the lead and had a 39-28 lead at the half, before blowing open in the second. Starting with the 19:07 mark in the second half, CBC went on a 30-12 run and led 68-40 with 9:38 to play, then had to hold off a 30-12 run from CC over the final nine minutes and change to hang on for the win.
MUSTANG NOTES
- This was CBC’s eighth win in 20 meetings against CC and their first win at the Southwell Complex in two years
- The win was the first over a ranked opponent for the Mustangs since March 2, 2019 when they downed #8 Missouri Baptist 64-60 in the AMC Semifinals
- The win was the first over a ranked opponent in the regular season since Nov. 21, 2018 when the Mustangs beat #6 Wayland Baptist 71-65 on the road
- CBC is now 7-2 when leading at the half this season
- Harding had 23 off the bench on 9-10 shooting from the field
- Sage Borbon chipped in with 17 points and four steals
- Foster had 14 points to go with his three assists
- Carlisle had a season-high 13 points to go with his leading rebound total of seven
- Deshawn Corprew had 10
- CBC made 13 three-pointers, second most this season
This was the third game involving CBC this season to end with an 80-70 scoreline, and CBC is 2-1 in those contests (Nov. 10 @ Oakland City was the other win, Nov. 11 vs. Ohio Christian was the loss.)
