CBC survives body blows from Hannibal-LaGrange

Conway — After not seeing a basketball court for two days following snow in Central Arkansas, #13 Central Baptist College returned to the court last Saturday at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse for an American Midwest Conference matchup with the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University. #13 CBC (13-3, 7-0 AMC) led by one at halftime and never let HLGU (5-8, 2-4 AMC) get within three in the second half before icing the game at the free throw line 84-75.

Sage Borbon and Gabe Johnson were the only Mustangs in double figures despite a hot shooting night from the field. The Mustangs were able to capitalize on defense and rebounding as well as points in the paint to remain undefeated in conference play.

GAME FLOW

In a game that featured nine ties and nine lead changes, neither team led by more than four in the first half and the Mustangs took a 35-34 lead into the locker room. A pair of Jonas Carlisle free throws early in the second half stretched the lead to three before HLGU would go on a 3-0 run to tie the score at 37. A layup by Johnson put the Mustangs back in front before a three made it 40-39 Trojans. Borbon gave CBC the lead again at the free throw line with 18:36 to play before a layup by HLGU 1:25 later put them back in front. Wade Williams would hit a jumper with 16:55 left to put the Mustangs in front 43-42 and that sparked a 14-3 run over the next 4:19 to put CBC up by their largest margin, 57-45 with 12:36 left. The Mustangs were able to keep the Trojans at arm’s length from there, going 4-6 at the free throw line over the final 1:33 to ice the win.
