12 Aug 2012 CABOT: Panthers focus on defense to return to form
Classification: 7A/6A East
Coach: Mike Malham
Last Season: 3-7 (2-5)
2011 was an uncharacteristically off-year for the Cabot Panthers.
Coming off three consecutive conference titles, the Panthers managed only three wins last fall. But 14 returning starters and a new conference could bode well for Cabot.
Senior Ian Thompson (5-7, 185) may return to the backfield for Cabot, but it’s his impact on the defensive side of the ball that will be the biggest help to the Panthers. The senior is a member of this year’s 501 Football Team.
“Ian is tough, plays hard and has good instincts,” Coach Mike Malham said. “He does what’s best for the team. He started at fullback last year, but we moved him to linebacker for this year. No complaints. He just wants to help the team win.
“Moving Ian to linebacker should make our defense much better this year.”
Senior Max Carroll (5-7, 160) returns to the backfield. He’ll be joined by juniors Chris Henry (5-7, 150) and Zach Launius (5-6, 155).
Seniors Josh Sorrell (6-0, 185) and Matt Griffin (5-9, 170) man the end positions on the defensive line. The Panther secondary returns two seniors at corner — Seth Hoggard (5-7, 150) and Chris Luna (5-8, 150).
