Bears walk off with a one-hitter

CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Bears got a 10-0 walk-off win in eight innings over the UAPB Golden Lions on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium, and flirted with the school’s first no-hitter since 2020.

UCA’s trio of pitchers, starter Jacob Pannell and relievers Jake Jones and Gavin Alveti allowed just one hit, a clean single with two outs in the seventh, but that was it. UCA struck out eight Golden Lions, three apiece for Pannell and Jones, and two for Alveti. UCA’s last no-hitter was in 2020 by current Los Angeles Dodger Gavin Stone against Southeastern Louisiana.

Meanwhile the Bears got at least one hit from every player in the lineup, including a big three-run triple by senior second baseman Tanner Leonard in the sixth inning. UCA loaded the bases in the eighth on a walk by Keon Moseni, a base hit by Preston Curtis and an infield single by Zeb Allen.

Moseni then scored the 10th and winning run on a wild pitch by UAPB reliever Jayden Brown with two outs in the eighth.

The Bears, playing without two injured starters on the infield, scored four times in the second inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Curtis, Sam Reynolds, Zeb Allen and Casey Shipley had the RBIs for the Bears. In the sixth, Shipley and Jagger Schattle had consecutive two-out base hits and Jake Trabbie drew a walk on four consecutive balls after falling behind 0-2 to load the bases.

Leonard, the longest-tenured Bear, then laced a triple into the left-field corner that cleared the bases and made it a 7-0 lead, setting the stage for the walk-off two innings later. Preston finished 3 for 6, while Trabbie scored twice. Moseni had a pair of walks and scored three runs. In all, the Bears drew 10 walks while issuing none.

Pannell, a junior righthander from Fayetteville, got the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season.

UCA returns to ASUN play this weekend at home for Alumni Weekend, hosting the Bellarmine Knights. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Bear Stadium.
