Swimming is one of the best cardio workouts because it allows for the heart rate to be elevated without the knee, hip and joint stress that comes from jogging or other high-impact activities. It is also an excellent way to burn calories and to build muscle at the same time.
“The biggest attraction to this program is two-fold: our top-notch pool and the positive, fun environment that all swimmers can enjoy by being in this program,” said Alyson Hannan, the Masters Program head coach.
The program attracts swimmers ranging from recreational swimmers that just want to improve their fitness to accomplished triathletes who are looking for greater fitness and stroke refinement. It is essentially an organized and structured swim program that allows participants to simply enjoy lap swimming or compete in swim meets.
The Masters and Adult Swim Program was initiated in July 2010 and was launched due to a high demand from 501 area triathletes and fitness swimmers who were looking for someone to guide them and motivate them to improve their swim fitness. Hannan, also Hendrix College’s assistant swim coach, took on the role as Masters coach. She has an extensive background in coaching and has been a major cog in the explosive growth of this program.
All participants are provided with a customized workout plan that will allow them to safely and effectively reach their specific fitness goal. If you compare this program to a land-based fitness program, it is similar to small-group personal training.
The Masters and Adult Fitness Swimming Program is currently offered seven times per week. Classes run for one hour and currently meet at 6 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and at 6:15 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There is also a noon hour class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The program is available to anyone over the age of 18. For more information on it, contact Alyson Hannan at 501.505.2905 or [email protected].
